4 Ways To Enjoy Spicy Cod Roe Recipes

Cod roe, also known as fish eggs or pollack roe is very popular food in Japan.
They are usually soaked in salt and various seasonings during the manufacturing process.

The one made with red pepper will be spicy cod roe (mentaiko or karashi-mentaiko in Japanese). This spicy cod roe is not only spicy but also has a unique umami taste.

What Is Cod Roe and How Is It Used?

1. Spicy Cod Roe Spaghetti

Ingredients (for 1 servings)

・2.6 oz (75g) Spaghetti
・1.4 oz (40g) Spicy cod roe
・1 tbsp and 1tsp (15g) Butter
・1 tbsp and 1tsp (15g) Olive oil
・A pinch of Garlic powder or Grated garlic
・2 tbsp Cooking liquid used to boil

Direction

1. Remove outer skin of spicy cod roe.

2. Put the spicy cod roe, butter, olive oil, and garlic powder into a clean bowl.

3. Boil spaghetti with salt following the cooking instruction on the package.

4. When draining the spaghetti, don’t forget to keep 2-3 tbsp of boiled soup.

5. Add spaghetti into the bowl (2). Mix well.

6. Add 1 tbsp of boiled soup, and stir well. Then, add another 1 tbsp of soup. Completed when it becomes smooth to some extent.

Ready to eat!

2. Spicy Cod Roe Baguette

Ingredients (for 1-2 servings)

・4 oz (110g) Baguette
・1 oz (30g) Spicy cod roe
・1.5 tbsp Butter
・1 tbsp Mayonnaise
・1 tbsp Parmesan cheese
・1/3 tsp Garlic powder or Grated garlic
・Minced parsley (for topping)

Direction

1. Remove outer skin of spicy cod roe.

2. Mix spicy cod roe, mayonnaise, parmesan cheese, and garlic powder.

3. Spread butter on the baguette.

4. Spread spicy cod roe paste on the baguette (place on the butter).

5. Bake the baguette for 3 minutes.

6. Sprinkle parsley as you like.

3. Breaded Chicken Cutlets with Cheese and Spicy Cod Roe

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

・10 oz (290g) Chicken breast
・1 oz (30g) Spicy cod roe
・2 tsp Mayonnaise
・2-3 tbsp Sliced cheese or Shredded cheese
・2 tbsp Flour
・1 Egg
・1 oz (30g) Panko (Bread crumbs)
・Oil for deep-frying

Direction

1. Remove outer skin of spicy cod roe.

2. Mix spicy cod roe and mayonnaise.

3. Thinly slice the chicken breast. Sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides.

4. Make a set of two, and apply the spicy cod roe sauce and cheese on one side. Put another side of the chicken on top.

5.Thinly coat the chicken in flour.

6. Put the chicken in beaten egg, and coat them in panko (bread crumbs).

7. Deep-fry the chicken. Fry for a total of 6 minutes, 3 minutes on each side.

Ready to eat!

4. Potato Salad with Spicy Cod Roe

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

・6 oz (170g) Potato
・1 oz (30g) Spicy cod roe
・2 tbsp Mayonnaise
・A pinch of salt and pepper
・A splash of lemon juice

Direction

1. Remove outer skin of spicy cod roe.

2. Cut potato into bite-sized, and microwave them for 4-5 minutes until it becomes so soft.

3. Crush the potato with a fork. Let it cool completely.

4. Add spicy cod roe, mayonnaise, salt and pepper. Squeeze the lemon. Mix well.
