This Addictive Japanese Air Fryer Agedashi Tofu is My New Obsession!

Today, I’m excited to share a super simple and healthy recipe for a Japanese classic: Agedashi Tofu. Traditionally, this dish is deep-fried, but we’re going to achieve that same delicious crispy texture using an air fryer. It’s much easier, uses less oil, and the result is absolutely fantastic!

This recipe is perfect for a quick weeknight meal, an appetizer, or a healthy side dish. Let’s get cooking!


Ingredients (Serves 1)

  • For the Tofu:

    • Tofu: 250g (8.8 oz)

    • Sesame Oil (or your favorite oil): 1 tbsp

    • All-Purpose Flour: 1 tbsp

    • Potato Starch: 1 tbsp

  • For the Soup:

    • Soy Sauce: 2 tbsp + 1 tsp

    • Mirin (sweet rice wine): 1 tbsp + 1/2 tsp

    • Dashi Powder: a dash

    • Water: 140ml (0.6 cup)

  • Toppings (as desired):

    • Grated Daikon Radish (from about 100g or 3.5 oz of daikon)

    • Grated Ginger (tube ginger is fine)

    • Finely Chopped Green Onions (about 5g or 0.2 oz)


Instructions

  1. Prep the Tofu: Cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces. Place them on a paper towel to drain off any excess water.

  2. Coat the Tofu: In a small bowl, mix the all-purpose flour and potato starch. Lightly coat the drained tofu with sesame oil, then dredge it in the flour and starch mixture until evenly coated.

  3. Air Fry: Place the coated tofu in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Air fry at 200°C (392°F) for 12 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

  4. Make the Soup: While the tofu is in the air fryer, prepare the soup. In a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin, dashi powder, and water. Bring it to a gentle boil.

  5. Prepare the Toppings: While the soup is heating, grate the daikon radish and ginger. Finely chop the green onions.

  6. Assemble and Serve: Once the tofu is done, carefully place the crispy tofu into a shallow bowl. Pour the warm soup over the tofu. Top with the grated daikon, ginger, and chopped green onions. Enjoy immediately!
