Last modified date

Hey foodies! Welcome back to the channel! Today, I’m super excited to share a Japanese comfort food classic that’s incredibly easy to make and uses just 4 main ingredientsTanindon! This Ground Beef and Egg Rice Bowl is savory, satisfying, and comes together in a flash. It’s perfect for a quick weeknight meal or a hearty lunch.

Plus, I’ll show you how to whip up a super simple and delicious Egg Drop Miso Soup to go with it!

What is Tanindon?

You might be familiar with Oyakodon, the popular “parent-and-child” rice bowl made with chicken and egg. The word “Tanin” (他人) in Japanese means “stranger” or “unrelated person.” So, Tanindon (他人丼) is a playful name for a similar rice bowl where the meat is not chicken (the “parent” of the egg). Instead, it typically features beef (like we’re using today!) or pork, cooked with onions and then bound together with a soft, savory egg mixture, all served over a fluffy bed of rice. It’s a delicious and distinct variation in the world of Japanese donburi (rice bowl dishes).

Let’s get cooking!

Tanindon (Ground Beef & Egg Rice Bowl) – Serves 1

Main Ingredients:

  • Ground Beef: 120g (approx. 4.2 oz)

  • Onion: 50g (approx. 1.8 oz)

  • Egg: 1 large

  • Cooked Rice: 150g – 200g (approx. 5.3 oz – 7 oz), or to your preference

Sauce (Tare):

  • Water: 3 Tbsp (45ml / approx. 0.19 US cup or just under 1/4 cup)

  • Sake: 1 Tbsp

  • Mirin: 1 Tbsp

  • Soy Sauce: 1 Tbsp

  • Sugar: 1 Tbsp

  • Dashi Powder (Japanese soup stock powder): 1/2 tsp

Optional Topping:

  • Chopped Parsley (or green onions/mitsuba)

Instructions for Tanindon (Easy Steps!):

  1. Prep the Onion & Sauce: Thinly slice the onion. In a small frying pan, combine all the sauce ingredients (water, sake, mirin, soy sauce, sugar, dashi powder) and mix well.

  2. Cook Onions & Beef: Add the sliced onion to the pan with the sauce. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook until the onions start to soften. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with your cooking utensil, and cook until it’s no longer pink.

  3. Simmer & Thicken: Continue to simmer, allowing the sauce to reduce and thicken slightly, until most of the liquid has evaporated.

  4. Add the Egg: Lightly beat the egg in a small bowl. Pour the beaten egg evenly over the beef and onion mixture in the pan.

  5. Cover & Set: Cover the pan with a lid and cook for about 1-2 minutes, or until the egg is cooked to your desired doneness (some like it slightly runny, others fully set).

  6. Serve: Scoop your preferred amount of hot cooked rice into a bowl. Gently slide the beef and egg mixture on top. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired. Enjoy immediately!

Simple Egg Drop Miso Soup – Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • Onion: 30g (approx. 1 oz), thinly sliced

  • Egg: 1 large

  • Water: 170ml (approx. 0.7 US cup or a generous 2/3 cup)

  • Miso Paste: 1 Tbsp

  • (Optional) Dashi Powder: 1/3 tsp (if your miso paste doesn’t already contain dashi)

Instructions for Miso Soup:

  1. Boil Onion: In a small pot, add the water and sliced onion. If using dashi powder, add it now. Bring to a boil.

  2. Add Egg: Reduce the heat to low and simmer for a few minutes until the onion is tender. Bring the heat back up slightly (gentle simmer) and carefully crack the egg directly into the pot.

  3. Cook Egg & Add Miso: Cook the egg for 1-2 minutes, or until it reaches your preferred firmness. Turn off the heat. Add the miso paste to the pot. Use a ladle and chopsticks (or a small whisk) to dissolve the miso completely. Important: Do not re-boil the soup after adding miso, as it can alter the flavor and aroma.

  4. Serve: Pour into a small bowl and enjoy with your Tanindon!

And there you have it – a delicious, easy, and satisfying Japanese meal! This Tanindon is a fantastic way to enjoy a comforting rice bowl, and the simple egg drop miso soup is the perfect accompaniment.
