Recipe & 3 Tricks for GYUDON (Japanese Beef Bowl) with American Beef

Gyudon (Japanese Beef Bowl)

Ingredients (2 servings)

・2 bowls of Rice
・6 oz (170g) Thinly sliced beef
・3.5 oz (100g) Sliced onion
・3.5 oz (100g) Grated onion
・1/2 tbsp Honey (optional)

・1.5 tbsp Sugar
・2 tsp Water

・2 tbsp Mirin
・2 tbsp Red wine (or White wine)

・0.6 cup (150ml) Water☆
・3 tbsp Soy sauce☆
・A pinch of Salt☆
・A pinch of Consomme☆
・A pinch of Dashi powder☆
・1 tsp Sliced garlic☆
・1 tsp Sliced ginger☆

Toppings
・Red pickled ginger (Beni-shoga)
・Onsen eggs

Gyu-zara (Set meal verison)
・Tofu
・Enoki mushrooms

Direction

1.  Mix grated onion with honey. Put them in a bag with thinly sliced beef. Mix well and keep it in the fridge for 30 minutes to soften the meat.

2.  Put sugar and water in a pot. Bring to a light boil and turn off the heat when you smell a nice caramel aroma.

3.  Add mirin and red wine into the pot. Boil for 1 minute to remove alcohol.

4.  Turn off the heat, and add ☆ to the pot. Mix well and add onion. Simmer for about 3 minutes.

5.  Add beef and simmer until beef is fully cooked. Let it sit for a few hours before eating to allow the flavors to soak in and make it even tastier. Top with egg and red pickled ginger, if desired.
