To help you follow along with our latest video and recreate this magic at home, I’ve put together this comprehensive blog post with all the ingredients and step-by-step instructions. Let’s get cooking!
The Ultimate All-Purpose Sauce (Banno Dare)
This sauce is the heart of today’s recipe. It’s quick to make and stores well, so you can always have a burst of Japanese flavor ready.
Yields: 1 serving (for the base sauce, enough for multiple dishes)
Ingredients:
Garlic: 1 clove, minced
Chili pepper: 1 (or a dash of cayenne pepper), minced
Green onion: 30g (1.05822 oz), minced
★ Water: 50ml (0.21134 US customary cups)
★ Soy sauce: 4 tablespoons
★ Sugar: 2 tablespoons
★ Oyster sauce: 1 tablespoon
★ Sesame oil: 1/2 tablespoon
★ Rice vinegar: 2 teaspoons
★ Aji-no-moto (MSG): A dash
★ Bonito flakes (Katsuobushi): 1g (0.03527 oz) (optional, skip if not available)
★ Sesame seeds: 1 tablespoon
Instructions:
Finely mince the garlic, chili pepper, and green onion.
In an airtight container, combine the minced ingredients with all the “★” ingredients. Mix well until everything is thoroughly combined.
Store the sauce in the refrigerator. It’s best after the flavors have melded for a while, but you can use it immediately!
How to Enjoy Your Banno Dare: Two Irresistible Rice Bowls!
This sauce truly shines with rice, and I’ve got two incredibly easy and delicious rice bowl (Donburi) recipes to get you started.
1. Crispy Creamy Fried Egg Rice Bowl
A simple yet satisfying bowl featuring a perfectly cooked fried egg marinated in our special sauce.
Yields: 1 serving
Ingredients:
Cooked rice: 200g (approx. 1 US cup)
Egg: 1
Cooking oil: 2 teaspoons
Your prepared Banno Dare
Instructions:
Heat a generous amount of oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Fry the egg until the whites are crispy at the edges and the yolk is still runny (or to your preference).
Carefully place the hot fried egg into a small amount of your Banno Dare (enough to coat it). Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let the flavors infuse. If you’re in a hurry, a shorter marinating time is fine too!
Serve the cooked rice in a bowl, top with the marinated egg, and drizzle with extra Banno Dare if desired. Enjoy!
2. Addictive Cabbage & Pork Rice Bowl
This hearty bowl combines tender pork and sweet cabbage with the incredible depth of our Banno Dare.
Yields: 1 serving
Ingredients:
Cooked rice: 200g (approx. 1 US cup)
Cabbage: 50g (1.7637 oz), cut into bite-sized pieces
Thinly sliced pork: 2 slices, 50g (1.7637 oz)
Cooking oil: 1 teaspoon
Your prepared Banno Dare
Instructions:
Cut the cabbage into bite-sized pieces. For extra flavor, you can marinate the thinly sliced pork in about 2 tablespoons of Banno Dare for at least 15 minutes before cooking.
Heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the cabbage and stir-fry until it starts to soften.
Push the cabbage to one side of the pan. Add the pork to the empty space and cook until browned and cooked through.
Once the pork is cooked, combine it with the cabbage.
Serve the cooked rice in a bowl, top with the stir-fried cabbage and pork, and drizzle with more Banno Dare to taste. Get ready for an addictive bite!
