How to Make a Japanese Sausage and Egg Bowl: A Quick & Savory Donburi Recipe
Hello, everyone!
Today, I’m sharing a recipe that is incredibly simple, fast, and packed with flavor: my Japanese-style Sausage and Egg Bowl. This is the kind of meal we whip up in Japan when we want something satisfying without spending a lot of time in the kitchen.
This donburi (rice bowl) features savory sausage, sweet onions, and crisp green peppers all coated in a delicious sweet and savory sauce. To top it all off, a perfectly fried sunny-side-up egg with a runny yolk brings everything together. The secret touch? A bit of butter for frying the egg, which adds a wonderful richness.
This is the perfect recipe for a busy weeknight, a quick lunch, or whenever you need a comforting meal in a flash.

Oyster Sauce: 1 tsp
Sugar: 1 tsp
For the Fried Egg
Egg: 1 large
Vegetable Oil: ½ tsp
Butter: ½ tsp
Instructions
Follow these simple steps to create your delicious sausage and egg bowl.
Prep the Ingredients: Finely chop the onion and green pepper. Slice the sausages into rounds. In a small bowl, mix together all the sauce ingredients (soy sauce, sake, oyster sauce, and sugar) and set aside.
Start the Stir-Fry: Heat 1 tsp of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes soft and translucent.
Cook the Sausage and Peppers: Add the sliced sausage to the pan and cook until they are lightly browned and fragrant. Add the green peppers and the prepared sauce mixture.
Simmer the Sauce: Continue to stir-fry everything together until the sauce has reduced and thickened, coating all the ingredients nicely.
Assemble the Bowl: Scoop the hot cooked rice into a donburi bowl. Place the sausage and pepper stir-fry on top of the rice.
Fry the Perfect Egg: In a clean pan, heat the ½ tsp of oil and ½ tsp of butter over medium heat. Once the butter is melted and sizzling, crack the egg into the pan. Fry it to your liking—a sunny-side-up egg with a runny yolk is highly recommended for this dish!
Serve and Enjoy: Carefully place the fried egg on top of the stir-fry. Your delicious Sausage and Egg Bowl is now ready to be enjoyed!
