This Rice Cooker Savory Japanese Chicken Wing Rice is My New Obsession!
Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing a “lazy but gourmet” recipe that has become a staple in my kitchen. We are making Takikomi Gohan (Japanese mixed rice) using chicken wings and a rice cooker. The chicken comes out incredibly tender, and the rice soaks up all the delicious umami from the wings and seasonings.
It’s simple, savory, and perfect for a busy weeknight!
Ingredients (Serves 1)
Uncooked white rice: 150g (5.3 oz)
Carrot: 60g (2.1 oz)
Chicken wings: 200g (7.1 oz)
Salt and pepper: A dash
Sesame oil (or your preferred cooking oil): 2 tsp
[Seasonings for the rice cooker]
Water: 200ml (0.85 US cup)
Soy sauce: 1 tbsp
Mirin: 1 tbsp
Oyster sauce: 1/2 tbsp
Sugar: 1/2 tsp
Consomme powder (or any stock powder/bouillon): 1/2 tsp
White pepper: A dash
[Topping]
Black pepper: To taste
Instructions
Prep the Rice: Rinse the rice several times by changing the water until it runs almost clear. Drain it thoroughly in a sieve to remove all excess water.
Prep the Ingredients: Slice the carrot into thin quarter-rounds. Season both sides of the chicken wings with a dash of salt and pepper.
Sear the Chicken: Heat the oil in a frying pan. Place the chicken wings skin-side down and fry until golden and crispy. Flip them and cook for another minute, then remove from heat. Do not discard the oil left in the pan!
Combine in the Rice Cooker: Put the drained rice and all the “Seasoning” ingredients into the rice cooker pot and stir well.
Layer the Ingredients: Spread the carrots evenly over the rice, then place the seared chicken wings on top. Pour in all the remaining oil from the frying pan for extra flavor.
Cook: Set your rice cooker to the “Normal/Regular Rice” mode. Once it’s done, sprinkle with black pepper before serving for an extra kick!
💡 Pro Tip for Success:
To ensure everything cooks evenly, make sure the total volume of ingredients does not exceed half of your rice cooker’s capacity. Making too large a batch at once may result in undercooked rice or chicken.
Enjoy your easy and delicious Japanese home cooking!
